James Morrison head coach of West Bromwich Albion during the EFL Sky Bet Championship match between Derby County and West Bromwich Albion at the Pride Park, Derby, UK on 9 September 2026.

Match reaction: Morrison fumes at 'lack of intensity' in second straight derby day defeat

The Albion boss was as honest as always in his assessment of the 1-0 loss to Birmingham. Here are his thoughts on the overall performance, team selection, the Nat Phillips' mistake and Aune Heggebo's confidence crisis.

After suffering his first home defeat as manager, Morrison spoke on a range of matchday issues.

On overall performance:

I was really disappointed, I didn't see enough intensity and determination in the first half. In the second, I felt we were on top but not really threatening at all. It was probably the same old story of not creating enough.

Obviously the first goal is always massive, especially in games like this. We didn't make enough of the chances we did create but I keep saying it, there wasn't enough threat on their goal. Their goalkeeper didn't make enough saves. We've got strikers who need opportunities. When they get them, they can finish. It's been proven but we're not getting enough of them. And when we do, we're not critical enough.
